A good analogy for this is to think of the battery isolator as a tap between the batteries and the alternator as a pump feeding the start battery. Once the pump (alternator) fills the start battery to a point (13.2v) the isolator detects this and turns on, allowing the feed going into the first battery to pass onto the secondary battery. when the battery light comes on this is because the alternator is not charging the battery and the voltage goes below 12.5 volts. When the alternator is working and the engine is running it will charge at 14 volts. if you have a volt meter you can put it across the battery and measure voltage with engine running should be near 14 or alternator ... I have replaced ground strap at tranny, negative battery cable, new 4 watt idiot bulb, new alternator, belt, cleaned 14 pin connectors, replaced all fuses, unhooked aftermarket security system and tracing wires.
